How an air-to-air heat pump works

An air-to-air heat pump is a split air conditioning system run in reverse. The outdoor unit takes heat from the outside air, even on cold days, and the indoor unit releases it into the room as warm air. The same system cools in summer.

Why choose one

  • Low running costs: around 3.5–5 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity (a SCOP of 3.5–5).
  • Fast: warm air within minutes, with each room controlled separately.
  • Two jobs in one: heating in winter, cooling and dehumidifying in summer.
  • Lower carbon: no gas or oil burnt on site.

Where they work best

Replacing electric panel or storage heaters, heating garden rooms, extensions and conservatories, topping up rooms the central heating struggles with, and heating offices, shops and workshops.

Grants and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant covers air-to-water heat pumps that feed radiators and hot water. It does not cover air-to-air systems, but air-to-air is much cheaper to install, so for many rooms it is still the better-value option. We will tell you which suits your building.

Across Ipswich we fit air-to-air heat pumps to replace electric panel and storage heaters in flats, to heat garden rooms and home offices, and to warm extensions where the central heating cannot keep up. In offices and shops they often replace old gas heaters and portable units.

FAQs

Heat pumps: common questions

Will an air-to-air heat pump work in winter?

Yes. Modern units heat effectively well below freezing, with a defrost cycle that runs automatically.

Can it replace my central heating?

It can heat individual rooms or a whole small home or flat, but it does not provide hot water.

Is there a grant?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not cover air-to-air heat pumps. Their lower installed cost often makes up for it.
